Foods to cut cravings
Need help quiting? Eat the right foods and you stand a better chance of success.
-
Cut down cravings by avoiding foods know to stimulate the adrenal glands -
sugary foods, fizzy drinks, alcohol, refined flour products and caffeine.
-
Nicotine withdrawal tends to reduce serotonin levels (an important brain
chemical that controls mood), which can lead to depression and mood swings.
A 5-hydroxy-tryptophan supplement can help to prevent these mood swings.
Foods that increase the body's serotonin levels include proteins such as seeds
(pumpkin, sunflower and sesame), almonds, pork, beef, prawns, chicken,
turkey, tofu, and tempeh. Kelp and bananas are also helpful.
-
Get enough folic acid, vitamin C, zinc and vitamin B6 in your diet. These the are
crucial for converting the tryptophan from the foods above into serotin. Other
foods that balance the brain chemistry include foods rich in essential fatty acids
such as fish, flax seeds, borage oil, evening primrose oil, pumpkin seeds and
walnuts.
-
Drink plenty of water to help the body detox.
