Welcome all to September,
A time when the rush hour traffic increases again, the school play grounds get noisy and air tickets drop in price. ..yep, that so-called routine to life hits us again. So talking about routine, let me get on with my September Monthly Boost….I hope you all had a lovely summer, we in the UK should have started our Vitamin D supplements by now, as the sun did not grace us too much with its glory, but mustn’t grumble.
This newsletter is a bit more personal this month, so those of you, who ‘shudder’ at the thought of anyone sharing a bit of their life, please do not feel rude but you are excused from reading any further and do join us in October.
Firstly I am starting a Saturday clinic from the end of September in Kingston-Upon-Thames, so no more excuses from you busy folk. On a more educational note for parents or parents-to-be, we have the wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable Trevor Gunn BSc, RSHom,, a graduate in biochemistry and author of 'Comparing Natural Immunity with Vaccination’. talking on the subject of immunity and vaccinations. For more information and bookings go to the August Monthly Boost
Back to getting personal….over the last two seasons I have seen some major health shifts in my husband, David and my older son Indie (4.5 yrs young). I say major, as over 5 yrs ago I would not have believed that such changes were possible…so here goes, you may just want to read this later when you feel like a ‘re-charge break’
My husband who suffered from hay fever from the age of 21yrs and now some 15 years on (now don’t try and add it up as it will only encourage his grey hairs!) went through the last hay fever season without a single anti-histamine or nasal decongestant, or any other form of suppressive medication. Until last year he was on anti-histamines (although less than the years before). He called it the ‘season from hell’ and just wanted to move to the dry heat of Arizona every year the Spring would start. Although that was tempting (when Britain is being rained upon), there was work to be done here.
To boot, Indie (my 4.5 year young boy), who unfortunately has allergies to cashews and Brazil nuts (yes, I know sounds odd, but its true), the previous June (2006) bit into a Brazil nut and started to manifest your typical allergic symptoms, ..his tongue had started to 'burn' as soon as he bit into the nut, within seconds his voice started to go hoarse, face and ears started to itch with small hives breaking out all over his body and of course he started to become irritable as his body started to get hot with the breathing rate increasing.
Now this is the part where some of you (especially my doctor colleagues and scientist friends) would say that I was irresponsible or plain mad, but I started to give him some homeopathic remedies for his symptoms, it was like a miracle happening before me (I am not exaggerating) his symptoms started to clear up from the top of his body and move down. Within seconds of taking his first homeopathic pill his breathing rate calmed down and the hoarseness in the voice stopped with his irritability vanishing). Herring, a well known naturopath (way back in the days before anti-histamines were around) would describe a healthy healing response as one that goes from the inside-out (so eczema is a good thing!as its OUT rather than IN!) and from the top to the bottom. By the end of Indie’s so-called healing response, his feet were hot and swollen, but everything else was absolutely fine. A short while later the boy was ‘right as rain’.
OK, now that the drama part is over and before some of you think of ‘reporting me to the local social worker’ get this…earlier this summer, about mid July, at a fair in Regent’s Park, London with thousands of people about, we were lazing around the eco friendly section of the fair, a lady kindly gave us some sample nutrition bars, labelled ‘macademia and cranberry’. They had a layer of mouth-watering dark chocolate with a healthy crunch.
As soon as Indie took a bite he spat it out and said ‘I don’t like it, my tongue is dry’…I grabbed the wrapper and low and behold, Brazil nuts were in the ingredients and these were present in higher amounts than the macadamias!!! .. by the time I looked back at him having read the wrapper he was scratching his arms, but no other symptoms. I did not have my homeopathic remedy kit on me, so I immediately took him to the ‘first aid’ area to get hold of an anti-histamine, (and they had no anti-histamines or adrenaline for that matter). By which time Indie was absolutely FINE, could he really be recovering from his allergy to Brazil nuts? So, the moral of the story is ‘always read the ingredients’!
But let's be serious, what happened here? I had heard of such ‘stories’ but always thought ‘yes nice story, let’s move on, we live in the 21st Century, full of toxicity and stress, it won’t be happening in my lifetime love’ but it DID happen in my lifetime and continues TO HAPPEN in my lifetime. What had happened here was that in both cases, (David’s and Indie’s) the body is learning how to ‘work properly’ or more rightly, ‘to become more balanced’. Our body has what it requires to be healthy, but sometimes it needs help in being ‘taught’ what to do. The homeopathic remedies in both cases are teaching David’s and Indie’s immune systems as to how to ‘behave’.
David has been on homeopathic treatment for his hay fever since January 2006 (and continues to do so) and he eats well taking some good nutrient supplements on a daily basis...not to mention the good old quercitin and adrenal support during the hay fever season. Indie has never had any traditional medicines, including Calpol, during his life and has always been treated nutritionally and homeopathically. I have chosen to go the natural approach to health for my family as it just makes mroe sense to me. And David wants to live a healthy life and live more than long enough to play tennis with his grand children without any ailments such as arthritis or being locked in doors due to the ‘season from hell’.
So when you are not feeling 100% or if you have a pre-diagnosed condition, ask the question ‘would you like to continue to treat the symptoms?’ which the traditional health system in general has excelled in doing, or ‘would you like to build your health’ by addressing the cause?
With hay fever, most people wait until the season literally ‘plagues’ them with runny eyes, itchy nose, itchy palate, sore throat need I go on? But the ‘treatment’ starts in October so that we can ‘re-educate the body as to how to function optimally’ and not just treat the symptoms when Spring or Summer comes.
By the way for obvious reasons I would not recommend that you try the above at home with your child’s allergies, but seek the help of a professional.
