01/08/2007 Monthly Boost August 2007
Vaccinations and Immunity
Dear All,
This month's subject is pretty high profile in the media at this present time and without further ado, I am diving straight into the subject, so here goes..
Working as a naturopathic practitioner, I have seen a various childhood illnesses in my practice, from measles through to eczema. Being a mother myself, I ask questions about various childhood illnesses and what impact they have on our children’s lives AND the life of our community.
I have seen the implementation of the six-in-one vaccine, and now the emergence of the chicken pox vaccine…but is chicken pox not just a natural childhood disease? Is it a killer, that we now have a vaccine for it? ..other questions that parents ask include:
- What is a reaction to a vaccine?
- Why do some children react to vaccines and others ‘do not’?
- How can we avoid serious illness?
- What treatments really work? When in NATURAL life has a newborn (let alone an adult) been exposed to diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT) at the same time? …
- Does it really make sense to expose an infant to all three at the same time, let alone the six-in-one?
- Vaccines are given by injection ……is this sensible when most of these diseases are caught by other means?
- Most of these vaccinations require preservatives to keep the vaccine ‘effective’……what are these preservatives? And are they safe to inject into a child’s bloodstream (more specifically a newborn’s)?
- If a baby/child is given a vaccine, the immune system should surely recognize it as a foreign invader and react against it, yes? ... then why do some babies not show any signs of distress (such as fever or restlessness etc), does that mean the vaccine load has been ‘dumped’ in an internal organ somewhere? Where has the vaccine load gone?
- If the vaccines are effective, then why do some vaccinated children/babies still get the disease that they have been vaccinated against?
- If the baby’s immune system is very young, then is there a ‘need’ to vaccinate so early? The immune cells at this time (called the T cells) are still deciding which ‘career path to take in life’. Whilst these cells are still making this decision they are suddenly exposed to a host of vaccines. DO not these vaccines ‘force’ the immune cells to make a decision that they are not ready to make?
- Do not these vital T cells mature at the age of 2 years of life? So what happens to the immune system when vaccines are introduced before they are mature?
- Does it not then make sense to maybe vaccinate later on, when the immune cells have matured?
These are some of the questions that parents have today.. to learn more and get more informed on this subject, The Kingston-Upon-Thames Arnica group will be hosting a talk by Trevor Gunn BSc, RSHom,, a graduate in Biochemistry and author of 'Comparing Natural Immunity with Vaccination’ (which is a must-read in my opinion).
