Dear All,
Welcome to the coming of a new season. Although time flies we don’t seem to be moving fast enough with it, especially if we go by what the media have to say about nutrition. Only yesterday the front page of the UK Times newspaper had ‘news’ that too much low fat dairy products could reduce the likelihood of women conceiving but also that regular consumption of a wide range of vitamin pills may actually increase the risk of dying by 5%.
Oh My! and without surprise I woke up this morning to numerous emails from concerned consumers. Now before reading on, let’s just stop for a few minutes, take a deep breath in through the nose and then exhale slowly through the mouth…feeling calmer?...if not do it again another 5 times (it helps me, but don’t let the boss catch you), then by all means read on…
Regarding the low fat issue I would like to refer you to my October 2006 Monthly Boost as I have covered that story to ‘death’. But let’s move onto the vitamin pill saga, because that it what it is ‘a saga’. I question whether the researchers who did this study understand nutrition let alone the internal functioning of our amazing bodies.
In summary before moving on, these so-called studies showed an increase in death rates from taking vitamin pills. Doing a trial on isolated vitamins such as Vitamin A (as in these studies) which apparently increased death rates by 16% is complete nonsense. Where in NATURE do we get ONLY vitamin A containing foods? The body requires other nutrients to utilise Vitamin A (such as Vitamin C, E, etc) this makes the study a waste of money and injects a bit of hysteria and fear into the public. Also although these are so-called randomized control trials (basically trying to reduce any bias) how can one truly do this with nutrition?
About 14 years ago when I was in the depths of my PhD I would not have looked at a study that did not have randomized control groups but in this scenario it is impossible to do that. Why? Basically because there are too many variables. For example when randomising such groups the researchers did not consider vital factors such as:
- Actual dietary lifestyle of these people
- Living environment
- Jobs/professions
- Nutritional supplement Brands
- Family history
- Mental/emotional traumas
As you may see the above factors alone can impact death rates, don’t you think? So when you read so-called research on nutrients/diet/supplements, question the quality of the research.
Some of my colleagues may even go onto say ‘check who funded such research’, some of these studies are funded by corporations that would financially benefit.
My advice is cut out the junk food, bring on the butter, coconut oil, clarified butter (ghee to some folks), organic meat, fish, vegetables, fruits etc
Why are nutritional supplements necessary in today’s ‘day and age’? You may ask…well we just have to look at the way our land is treated, or rather abused. We use toxic fertilizers, pesticides, and further more live in an increasingly polluted environment and this results in nutritionally poor quality food.
We only have to look back at the way farmers used to farm, whereby the land was given a break after a crop had been harvested. The crops were also rotated around to ensure that the richness of the soil is not only maintained but also that the soil gets to build up its own nutrients. I only have to look at my own family in the Punjab and can see why my grand parents lived till their late 90s and early 100s and passed away without any disease. They were fortunately ‘poor’ enough to not be able to afford fertilisers and toxic pesticides, let alone the mutant GM seeds! Their so-called perceived ‘poverty’ gave them a longer, healthier and a better quality life.
And we in the West are being told that vitamin supplements increase death rate….come on ladies and gentlemen, let us get back to the basics and take control of our health.
Over the Spring we will be doing various work shops in relation to nutrition and health (first few will be on nutrition within the family and how to use basic natural substances to ‘treat’ acute conditions such as colds, high fevers, coughs, menstrual cramps). For booking and/or more information please click here.
Next month we will be touching upon the truth as to why our children are getting unhealthier and as a RESULT becoming over weight…not necessarily the other way round.
To your great health!
Khush
