01/06/2005 Monthly Boost June 2005
Breast cancer - taken by stardom
Welcome to this bright sunny month of June. After a wonderful relaxing week basking in the sun and enjoying good food as well as re-juvenating my own body mind and soul ( I make it sound so simple) I arrive back in the UK to be bombarded with media news on breast cancer as well as email requests on breast cancer information. It has been reported that since Kylie Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer there has been an increase in the requests for mammograms. It never ceases to amaze me on how the media influences on society, even if it creates fear rather than increasing knowledge.
So let me shed some light on this subject, by no means is this comprehensive. Why is the incidence of breast cancer on the increase?...there are several reasons…always remember cancer has numerous causes, there is no one cause in most cases. So why is it on the increase?
- Poor diet or not an appropriate diet according to one’s metabolic needs
- An increasingly toxic environment
- Poor emotional well being
- An unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking, excess alcohol, caffeine, drugs and so on
- Medications such as the contraceptive pill
- Toxic personal care products this also includes the sun screen lotions! As well as deodorants
- Toxic household chemicals, from paint to floor wax through to cleaning products
Now I can go through each bullet point in detail but this would mean that both you and I would be at the computer for days..so I am going to give you the ‘highlights’ and I am sure if your health is important to you then you will go and explore more.
Diet is huge! ...now I am not just saying that just because I 'majored' in nutrition. It is important that I shatter the myth that by becoming a vegetarian you reduce the risks of cancer, this has not been proven. If anything many people are actually protein malnourished and watch out for the so-called alternative vegetarian protein source called Quorn that is made with vat-grown fungus (a monthly boost topic for another time maybe).
Regarding personal care products…now these are nearly as important as nutrition and yes you may think that I am over-exaggerating, but nothing could be further from the truth. A few weeks ago I was given a clipping of an article on natural body products and it was music to my ears. Basically the punch line was ‘if you can’t eat it, don’t use it on your skin’. Knowing this, Would you now use anything that’s in your bathroom cabinet? It may sound over the top but I assure you watch this space, your grand children will be shocked at what our generation is consuming. At present we are offering mini personal care kits at a reduced price (also for babies too!) that you may want to try out (you can even taste them!). For more information send an email to info@khushmark.com
The lymph system is very important in removing toxins from the body. There are numerous lymph pathways and lymph nodes in the arm pits, under the breasts and in between the breasts. And there are some women who have found lumps in their breasts to later find that they were lumps of lymph fluid that was restricted from draining due to tight bra fittings! Research shows that wearing the wrong size bra (too tight especially the so-called ‘push-up’ bras) can block the lymphatic system.
Also whilst we are questioning the contents of our bathroom cabinet, check that your deodorants do not contain parabens and I don’t even want to waste your or my time on anti-perspirants as they should be banned. Avoid using any un-natural chemicals under the arm pit as they will seep into the lymph system and ‘clog’ it up.
Swiftly moving onto the contraceptive pill, it is not only a very popular method of contraception in this day and age but also a ‘beauty pill’ for female acne sufferers. But what about the high level of synthetic hormones in these ‘make life easier’ pills? Such hormones can throw the liver into chaos leading to a build up of ‘bad' oestrogens.
Such 'bad' oestrogens are known to increase the risk of breast cancer and these can also be found in petrochemical pollutants and petrochemical products. Such oestrogens are also known as xenohormones and can either block or oppose the action of the natural oestrogens. They can mimic the effects of our natural oestrogens but with a stronger or weaker effect or they can send unhealthy messages to different parts of the body such as the breast creating ill health. Xenohormones are present in petrochemical products and these include various pesticides, herbicides, carpets, (yes new carpets can release formaldehyde), paint, plastics, cosmetic products, detergent breakdown products etc.
Unfortunately the list is endless, but the great news is that there are healthy more natural alternatives. It is no wonder that not only ethically aware companies are breaking into the multi-million dollar market but also the natural organic companies.
To great health!
