01/04/2005 Monthly Boost April 2005
Hay its Spring Fever
Welcome to April,
I hope you are keeping well and the climate is treating you fine. For some, Spring is not something we embrace with open arms, as it is the season when, runny noses, itchy eyes, irritability, sore throats and headaches, collectively known as ‘Hay Fever’ can kick in . It is not easy to go through the whole of the ‘sunshine’ season with ‘flu-like’ symptoms over-dosing on anti-histamines which helped last year but this year seem to be ineffective!
Most hay fever cases we deal with are mainly adults who never had hay fever as children. There are more and more people getting hay fever as they mature (sounds more politically correct) and it’s not just about the immune system going ‘hay-wire’ (no pun intended!). Any intelligent guesses why it is on the increase? ..…Well there are several reasons, but it all comes down to toxins. Be they, biological, chemical or emotional (for more details go to toxins).
When we are born, we are ‘cleaner’ than we will ever be (and yes that is in every sense of the word). As we live life and do our bit in this world, we gather all sorts of ‘junk’ (just another term for toxins). Some of us can accumulate so much ‘junk’ that we don’t even realize until ‘the straw that breaks the camel’s back’ tips us into toxic overload. The manifestation of toxic overload, can be hay fever, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, psoriasis...get the gist?
Hay fever never just happens, it builds up over time. Let me use an example here…Tom came to see me for his hay fever. He was taking anti-histamines for several years during the hay fever season, until one year no medication seem to ‘clear’ his symptoms. Having covered Tom’s health history the whole story unravelled slowly. Tom was also brought up on a farm and at the age of 6 years, he was involved in a car accident and suffered minor bruises, but was not hospitalised or prescribed any medications. At the age of 10 years he was bullied at school for about the length of a semester.
At 26 years he moved to London and started a high stress job as an accountant for a major city bank, doing the long hours, ‘boozing’ at weekends (that’s drinking alcohol to intoxicating levels) to ‘unwind’ (hmmmm) and at the age of 28 years he developed hay fever. When Tom came to see me (at 32 years of age) all the anti-histamines that he was prescribed previously no longer helped his symptoms (rather suppressed his symptoms). Now there was a lot we uncovered and plenty to work with, but the causal chain of the hay fever was the car accident…hard to believe…but true.
Tom was raised on a farm, so he already had a high pesticide burden (which was also confirmed by testing). The car accident triggered a further ‘stress’ on the body which carried onto his later life, which was further worsened by the bullying (hay fever can be an emotional linked condition and that does not mean a psychotic illness for the purist amongst us) and then to add fuel to the fire Tom starts a stressful job in a polluted city with a dietary lifestyle that further aggravated his toxic load. By the time he came and sat in my office his adrenals were ‘fried’, liver ‘confused’ and the immune system ‘drunk’ with toxins.
To alleviate his acute hay fever symptoms I gave him a homeopathic remedy specific for him and ALL his symptoms cleared up within 48 hours. Although Tom was tempted to just take the remedy and not follow up with a detox protocol, I explained the that the hay fever could come back the next year but in a different form such as asthma, arthritis…so after a bit of education as well as successful eradication of all his hay fever symptoms, Tom spent the next 3 months reducing his toxic load through re-building and supporting various systems in his body, as well as ‘cleaning’ out his body using a dietary approach, with nutritional, homeopathic and a few herbal remedies.
